Sat Nav Forensics

Satellite Navigation Forensics relates to the forensic recovery of data from a wide variety of satellite navigation systems. The most popular of these devices are covered by the Forensic Analysts at Sytech and include but are not limited to:

TomTom Devices
Garmin Devices
Navman Devices
Magellan Devices
As well as many other propriety and bespoke GPS products.

A large amount of tracking information can potentially be recovered from Satellite Navigation systems.

This includes the following:

Home Location of the device
Favourite Locations inputted
Recent Destinations inputted
The start and end points of the last journey
Retrieval of deleted journeys
Location of where Satellite Navigation System was turned off

Many Satellite Navigation systems have Bluetooth capabilities which allow them to connect to a users mobile telephone for hands free use of the telephone.  If this function is used then traces of this activity can be located on the device.

Information which can potentially be recovered in relation to this function is as follows:

Stored Phonebook
Called Phone Numbers
Received Phone Numbers
Sent SMS Messages
Received SMS Messages

Modern ‘Smart Phones’ have in-built Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities.  It is possible to recover similar levels of tracking information from these devices as with the standalone satellite navigation systems. Be it from Google Maps Navigation to Applications such as TomTom or Co-Pilot on many of the Mobile Platforms

These mobile GPS devices are covered further in our Mobile Phone Forensics section.
