Camera Forensics

Using the latest Digital Camera Forensic techniques and procedures it is possible to recover and analyse Digital Images or Videos stored to a Digital Camera, whether the Images / Videos be live or deleted.

Through the recovery and analysis services provided, a wealth of evidentiary and important data is accessible outside of the actual Image or Video. This takes the form of Metadata.

Metadata is the extra information stored within the media and is commonly referred to as EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) Data.
EXIF Data is not usually viewable by ordinary means.

The EXIF can contain but is not limited to the following:

Digital Camera and Owner Information.
Camera Settings.
This includes static information such as the camera model and make, and information that varies with each image such as orientation (rotation), aperture, shutter speed, focal length, metering mode, and ISO speed information.

Date and time information.
Digital cameras will record the current date and time as set by the Cameras internal time which in turn is set by the user and saves this in the Metadata.

Geolocation/Geotagging data.
This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though they can also include the extremely accurate GPS time and date, altitude, bearing, distance, accuracy data, place names and weather.

However with all this Evidential based data a verification best practice method should be carried out.
As in todays Digital Age it is all too easy using products such as Adobe Photoshop or other free variants to edit or manipulate a Digital Image to show falsified information.

Therefore all recovered materials will be validated as to their authenticity and provenance.

This procedure isn't just restricted to Digital Cameras it can be performed on Mobile Phone Handsets, Personal Computers (PCs), Memory Cards or even the Internet.
